Ostrava: General information

With a population of 315,000, the metropolis of Moravia-Silesia is the Czech Republic's third largest city. A purely industrial place with huge steel-production and coal-mining facilities for decades, Ostrava has gradually been changing after 1990 to become a centre for modern technology, business, entertainment and sports. University level education is offered by VŠB - Technical University, the University of Ostrava and the Ostrava Business School that, altogether, are attended by about 25,000 students every year.

Five theatres, tens of galleries, cinemas and museums make Ostrava an exciting city also on the culture & entertainment side, including renowned festivals such as Janácek's May, St. Venceslas Festival, Colours of Ostrava, and more. One of the best-known places to go for night-time entertainment is Stodolní, a street with countless pubs, bars and music clubs. Industrial monuments in Dolní Vítkovice, including former bituminous coal mining facilities (deep mine) and high furnaces, are world-unique. Also popular with tourists are two museums of mining.

With world championships in ice-hockey, athletics (juniors), volleyball, floorball and futsal, the Golden Spike (world-renowned athletics meeting), the Davis Cup (tennis) and very popular football and ice-hockey clubs (Baník Ostrava and HC Vítkovice, respectively), Ostrava is also a place known for top-class sports. Moreover, the city and its surroundings offer a large number of opportunities to sports enthusiasts.
